What is high intensity and high power laser therapy?

High-Intensity or High Power Laser Therapy (also commonly known as Class 4 Laser Therapy) is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused light energy to promote cellular repair, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain. Unlike low power lasers (also known as cold lasers, Class 3 Lasers, or Class 2 Lasers) that may have some of the same wavelengths (a component in depth and physiological effect), high power lasers deliver higher power outputs, enabling deeper penetration energy delivery and faster therapeutic results for a wide range of conditions, hence improving many outcomes over lower class lasers. Therapeutic laser therapy is commonly used by chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other doctors for musculoskeletal conditions.

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing, reduce pain, and improve mobility. It works by increasing blood flow, breaking down scar tissue, and triggering the body’s natural repair processes. What is the difference between high power lasers (Class IV Lasers) and low power lasers (Class II and III Lasers)?

Class 4 lasers are high-powered devices (>500mW) capable of delivering more energy in less time, allowing for deeper tissue energy penetration, and faster treatment sessions. By contrast, Class 2 and 3 lasers (low power lasers or cold lasers) operate at lower power levels, making them more effective for superficial applications and temporary pain relief. This distinction makes Class 4 lasers the preferred choice for advanced therapeutic needs by delivering the maximally beneficial dosage to influence the condition for both healing and pain. What is the difference between different types of shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy comes in two main types: (1) Radial and (2) Focused (also “defocused” using similar focal technology). Radial shockwaves (high-pressure acoustic sound waves) spread energy across a broader area and are ideal for superficial to deeper conditions, while focused shockwaves penetrate deeper into tissues with no superficial stimulation of sensation. Are there any side effects to high power laser (Class 4 Laser) therapy, and does it hurt?

Therapeutic laser therapy is non-invasive and safe when used by trained professionals and in fact is one of the lowest contraindicated side effect modalities in the clinic setting. Most patients experience no pain during treatment, only a mild warming sensation as the laser penetrates the tissue and in fact, many feel benefit within a single treatment, improving over subsequent treatments. Unlike surgical lasers, therapeutic lasers are designed to heal without cutting or burning. Side effects, such as temporary redness, are rare when applied appropriately and resolve quickly.
